review: Another Year

by Oli

Another Year is principally a film about Jim Broadbent, although it is also about life.

At times the film is very sad and at other times it is very happy. Its director, Mike Leigh, expertly weighed these two against one another. I do not like to feel an overabundance of any emotion, and by the end of Another Year my emotions suitably cancelled one another out. I was void.

The film is not a documentary, although the excellence of the acting could easily trick a more naive cinema-goer into thinking that this was the case. I was not fooled, because I correctly noticed that the character Tom Hepple was played by Jim Broadbent - Jim Broadbent's name is not Tom Hepple.

Overall, I recommend Another Year to everybody.
